How to read competitor reviews like a strategist

Customers complain about the same things over and over. Read competitor reviews to find gaps and promise the opposite, credibly.

Sort by one and two stars first

Bad reviews show what customers actually care about. Common complaints in home services are: late arrivals, no-shows, hidden fees, poor cleanup, slow follow-up, and warranty issues. Look for patterns, not one-off rants.

Look for the service gaps

If three customers complain that a competitor never returns calls, that is your opening. Promote your response-time guarantee. If they complain about mess, promise a clean job site and post photos proving it.

Read five-star reviews for positioning clues

Good reviews reveal what customers are willing to praise. If homeowners love a competitor’s financing, clear communication, or weekend service, those are table stakes. Decide which ones to match or exceed.

Turn the insight into a checklist

Make a simple checklist: the top three complaints and the top three praises. Turn each into a promise on your website, quote and voicemail. When you can say β€œWe fix what others are complained about,” you win trust fast.
